Taobao does not have an English button, and it never will

Everybody goes looking for the language setting. It is the first instinct, it feels like it must be in there somewhere, and you can lose a genuinely irritating twenty minutes before you accept the truth: there isn't one. Taobao is Chinese, only Chinese, and that is the end of it.

The confusion is understandable. AliExpress is Alibaba too, and AliExpress is in English, so surely. But AliExpress is a different shop with different sellers and different prices pointed at a different continent. It is not Taobao with the labels swapped.

The things that do not work, in order of how often people try them

Translating the mobile site in a browser. The site is a thin wrapper around the app. You get a mangled layout and a checkout that quietly refuses to finish.

Copy and paste. Fine for one product title. Try comparing four listings this way and you will give up somewhere around the second.

Google Translate. Google left the mainland in 2022. On a Chinese network the camera and live text features simply do not answer. Offline packs still work, but an offline pack cannot read an app that is running.

What actually works

Translate the screen where it sits, with Taobao still running underneath. Real app, real prices, real checkout, just readable. Nothing gets copied anywhere and nothing gets retyped.

Three places where it stops being a convenience and starts being the difference between buying and giving up. The filter panel, where one wrong tap silently changes your entire search. The delivery block, which is where you find out the seller will not ship to you at all. And the checkout address form, which is unforgiving and long.

The bit nobody warns you about

Chinese listings are mostly pictures. Not photographs of the product, though those too, but long vertical image strips containing the actual description: the sizing chart, the fabric, the washing instructions, whether it runs small.

So a translator that reads the page text gives you a beautifully translated title and price, and leaves the entire useful part untouched, because as far as the page is concerned that part is not text at all. It is a JPEG.

This is the single most common reason people conclude that translating Taobao "does not really work". It worked. It just did not read the pictures.

On sizes

Chinese sizing runs small, often by a full size, sometimes two. Ignore the letter on the label and find the chart in the images, which is in centimeters and is honest. Measure a jacket you already own and compare numbers. It takes two minutes and saves a return you will not enjoy arranging.

Questions people ask

Does Taobao have an English version?

No. Taobao is Chinese only. AliExpress is Alibaba's international app, but it is a different marketplace with different sellers and prices, not a translation of Taobao.

Can I use Taobao with a foreign card?

Mostly yes. Alipay accepts major foreign cards for most sellers now. The friction is usually the address form and the seller messages rather than the payment itself.

Why is the product description blank when I translate the page?

Because it is not text. Chinese sellers put descriptions into images, so anything that only reads page text will skip them entirely.
