Does Google Translate work in China?

Works in mainland China

  • Typed text, with the offline pack
  • The camera, with the offline pack
  • WeChat's own translate, inside WeChat
  • Everything, on roaming data

Does not work

  • Anything online, on hotel wifi
  • Anything online, on a Chinese SIM
  • Offline conversation in Chinese
  • Downloading the pack after you land

Not on a Chinese network. Google closed its mainland translation service in 2022, and the firewall blocks Google's servers, so on hotel wifi or a Chinese SIM the app has nobody to ask. There are two exceptions: the offline pack, if you download it before you fly, and roaming data, which never touches the Chinese network at all.

What still works offline

Download Chinese (Simplified) in the Translate app before you leave. With it, typed text and camera translation work with no connection at all. Google's own help pages say the camera works offline for any language you have downloaded.

Then test it at home with the phone in airplane mode. That five-minute test is the whole difference between a plan and a hope, and it is far easier to fix in your kitchen than at a ticket window.

What does not

  • Conversation in Chinese. Google's offline live translation runs only on Pixel 9, 10 and 11, and Chinese is not one of its offline languages. Speaking Chinese through Google needs a connection that reaches Google.
  • Everything else that talks to Google. Website translation, the online features, and downloading the pack after you land. Do not plan to fetch it at the airport.

When the online app works

Roaming. A home SIM on roaming sends your data back through your own operator, so Google loads as if you never left. Some travel eSIMs route through Hong Kong or Singapore for the same result. Check the listing before you buy, because the wording is often vague.

The catch is cost, and wifi. A phone uses wifi over mobile data the moment it can, and hotel wifi is the Chinese internet. Which is why Google Translate tends to go quiet in exactly the room where you sat down to use it.

A VPN gets you there too, on the days it connects.

The part a working Google Translate still leaves to you

Most of a trip here happens inside Chinese apps: Meituan for food, the messages your DiDi driver sends, Taobao, the mini program a museum uses for tickets. Offline, Google Translate reads what you type and what you point the camera at. The app you have open on the same phone is a different matter: screenshots and imports, or retyping.

WeChat has a shortcut of its own. Press and hold a message and choose Translate. It runs on WeChat's servers, so it works on any Chinese network.

Where aharoam fits

aharoam is built for that gap. It translates the screen of the app you have open, where it sits, on Chinese wifi and Chinese SIM cards, with no VPN. It does need a connection: screens you have already translated come back offline, new ones do not. With no signal at all, the offline Google pack is the better tool, and it is worth having both. aharoam is Android only, and the first 50 translations are free.

Before you fly

  1. Download Chinese (Simplified) in Google Translate, and test it in airplane mode.
  2. Check your roaming rate, or pick an eSIM that says it routes outside the mainland.
  3. Install the Chinese apps you will need, and a translator that does not depend on Google. The internet guide has the list.

Questions people ask

Does Google Translate work in China?

Not online on a Chinese network: Google is blocked on Chinese wifi and Chinese SIM cards. With the Chinese offline pack downloaded before you travel, typed text and camera translation still work.

Does Google Translate work offline in China?

Yes, if you download the Chinese (Simplified) pack before you go. Typed text and camera translation then work with no connection. Conversation in Chinese does not.

Can I download the Google Translate offline pack in China?

Do not count on it. The download comes from Google, so get it at home, or over roaming data.

Does Google Translate work in Hong Kong?

Yes. Hong Kong is outside the mainland firewall, so Google works normally there.

Do I need a VPN to use Google Translate in China?

Not for the offline pack, and not on roaming data. For the online features on Chinese wifi or a Chinese SIM, a VPN is what people use.
