Why your map pin is on the wrong side of the river

Chinese map apps are among the best in the world, and this surprises people who expect a compromise. They route across metro, bus, walking and taxi in a single view, they know the inside of shopping centers, they know which station exit you want. The problem is not quality. The problem is that they are in Chinese, and the one you have used your whole life does not load.

What to actually use

Amap or Baidu Maps. Both are excellent. Apple Maps works in China on licensed local data and is a reasonable English-language fallback if you want one, though it knows less about transit.

The coordinate thing, which is real and catches people out

China requires a shifted coordinate system for public maps. The practical effect is that a latitude and longitude copied off a Western website and pasted into a Chinese map app does not land where you meant. Sometimes it is a street away. Sometimes it is across water.

So search by name or address inside the app. Do not paste coordinates between systems and trust the result, because it will be confidently and specifically wrong.

An address gets you to a compound, not a door

Large residential and office compounds have several gates. The one your pin sits nearest may be locked, or may be a ten minute walk around a perimeter wall from the building you actually want. This is why ride hailing apps use named pickup points, and why they are worth using even for short trips.

Habits worth picking up

• Screenshot your destination in Chinese characters before you set off. It survives having no signal, and you can simply show it to a driver.
• Save the hotel on day one, in the app, by name.
• Check which metro exit you want. Big stations have a dozen and the wrong one is fifteen minutes and a mood.
• Distrust walking times. Fences, overpasses and gated compounds mean the straight line is rarely available.
