You cannot just turn up at the mountain

The scenery is as good as the photographs. The bit the photographs leave out is that these are managed sites with capacity limits, ticket systems and internal bus networks, and that arriving at the bottom of a famous mountain without a booking in August means looking at it from the car park.

Book a dated slot

Most major scenic areas require a reservation for a specific day, made through a mini program or the site's own app. Popular ones sell out days ahead in summer and around public holidays.

The passport is the ticket, again

Book with the document you will be carrying and then carry it. Gates scan the passport rather than a printout, and a mismatch is not something the person on the barrier can fix for you.

Inside is bigger than you think

A large park is not a trail. It is an area tens of kilometers across with shuttle buses, cable cars, several entrances and separate tickets for the bits inside it. Work out which entrance you want before you book, because the wrong gate can be two hours from the view you came for.

Crowds are the whole variable

Chinese public holidays put an enormous number of people in the same places in the same week. The first week of October and the Spring Festival period are the two to plan around. The same mountain midweek in a normal month is a completely different day out.

Things worth knowing

• Paths are usually paved and stepped, and the steps do not stop. Kilometers badly understate the effort.
• Food and water are available on the main routes, so you do not need to carry a day's supplies.
• Signage is bilingual on famous routes and Chinese only the moment you leave them.
• Cable cars close for weather at no notice, which can turn a descent into a very long walk.
