Everything is happening in a group chat you are not in yet

The thing to understand early is that WeChat is not a messaging app that people also use. It is the layer everything social sits on, and if you are not on it you are not slightly behind, you are absent.

Nobody exchanges phone numbers

You scan each other's QR code, phone to phone, at the end of a first conversation. Two seconds, no typing, and it replaces both the number and the email address. Find out where your own code lives before somebody asks, because fumbling for it is a small and avoidable embarrassment.

Groups, not individuals

Almost nothing is organized one to one. Hiking, bouldering, board games, language exchange, the people in your building, the parents at a school, the expats who drink on Thursdays: every one of those is a WeChat group of anywhere between twenty and five hundred people, and being in it is the only way you find out anything is happening at all.

You generally get added by a member rather than finding it by search. Which means the first group is the hard one and every subsequent group is easy, and the answer is simply to ask somebody.

Where the first one comes from

• Anywhere with a hobby attached. Climbing gyms, run clubs, board game cafes, language schools. They all run groups and they will add you, because that is how they fill their events.
• Coworking spaces, even on a day pass.
• Xiaohongshu, which works as a recommendation network and carries a lot of local event posts.
• Meetup and Couchsurfing exist in the big cities and are much quieter than their WeChat equivalents.

Fair warning about the reading

Group chat is fast, heavy on slang and stickers, and mixes genuine announcements with two hundred lines of noise. It is the least formal Chinese you will meet and by far the hardest to follow with a dictionary, because the one message that matters looks exactly like the rest.
