Hospitals here are fast, and organized nothing like yours

Chinese hospitals are quick, competent and cheap by Western standards. Almost every problem a visitor has with them is procedural rather than medical: not knowing the order things happen in, and assuming it works like home.

There is no GP

You do not register with a local practice and you do not have a doctor who knows you. For anything routine you go to a hospital outpatient department, choose the relevant specialty yourself, and book a slot.

That self-triage feels odd the first time. It is normal here.

Booking

Most hospitals release appointments through their own WeChat mini program, in batches, a few days ahead. Well-known hospitals in big cities go in minutes, in a way that will feel familiar to anyone who has bought concert tickets. District hospitals are far easier to get into and entirely competent for ordinary problems.

Walk-in registration exists and means waiting.

Register before you see anybody

There is a desk or a machine, and you use your passport, and it produces a card or a number that everything else in the visit hangs off, including payment.

The shape of a visit

You see the doctor briefly. They order tests. You go and pay for the tests, you take the tests, you come back to the same doctor with the results.

So you will move between several windows in a specific order, and a straightforward visit can take a couple of hours. This is not a queue you are losing. It is a sequence, and it moves.

International clinics

Large cities have private clinics with English-speaking doctors and appointment conventions you will recognize. They cost a great deal more, and if you are ill, alone, and want the whole thing to be simple rather than educational, they are the right answer. Check whether your insurance bills them directly before you need to know.

Bring your own

Pharmacies are everywhere and sell plenty over the counter, but the brand you trust may not exist and the box that does will be in Chinese. Bring what you rely on.

Can foreigners use Chinese public hospitals?

Yes. You register with your passport and pay as you go. Many large hospitals have an international department with English-speaking staff.

Do I need an appointment?

Is treatment in China expensive for visitors?

Public hospital consultations are inexpensive by Western standards. International clinics cost far more. Travel insurance is still worth having.
